"Shaping the future of television"

Innovation will carry Television to places we cannot imagine

FOUNDING SUPPORTER

Date: October 10th, 2000
Reported by: Willem Tijssen
Chairman of the APCF taskforce

Beginning on Monday the 2nd and continuing through Friday the 5th of October, members of the Africa Peace Cup Foundation were present at the annual MIPCOM Television and Media Convention in Cannes, France. The Members of the taskforce, supported by friends of the Foundation, were pleased to welcome more than 150 interested visitors at our stand. In an exhibition of their support for our cause and the Africa Peace Cup project, the MIPCOM organization contributed our exhibition stand, number 04.12, without cost. The generous gesture was warmly received by the Foundation and the visitors at the Fair.

During the convention visitors from diverse backgrounds were attracted to the stand for a wide variety of reasons. Their enthusiasm for the Africa Peace Cup concept confirms a broad interest base for the mission and attests to the general appeal of the method that is central to our concept. At the stand, discussions were held with representatives from television stations, production companies, journalists, content providers and marketing professionals from around the world.

The enthusiasm and excitement with which the Africa Peace Cup project was received at this years MIPCOM is a great encouragement for the further promotion of this initiative. The MIPCOM organization confirmed this success further by continuing their support for the Africa Peace Cup with an invitation for a free stand at the upcoming MIP Fair in April 2001.

Requests for information came from a wide range of visitors to the Africa Peace Cup stand at the MIPCOM. Requests were received regarding diverse subjects : - broadcasting rights for the Africa Peace Cup ‘Match’ - the production of documentaries focused on - the situation of children in war torn territories - the quality of life-improvement projects - the role of football in African society - the production of specials - interviews with famous football players - interviews with NGO’s - follow-ups - statements from local and int’l authorities regarding peace&progress - testimonials - the organization of a Global Africa Day - the organization of an Africa Song Contest - the organization of an Africa music Festival - the release of an Africa for Africa Peace Song with African artists - ‘the making of ‘ (all of the above) - variations on the theme

Through discussion and interaction with visitors and our network we learned that the television rights for the ‘Match’ could easily exceed $25 million, and sponsoring could match that amount. This all depends upon the names and number of star players who are willing to support the Africa Peace Cup and participate in the project.

A major Music Channel showed serious interest in all musical and entertainment aspects of the project. And the U.S. based Odyssey Network has expressed its willingness to ‘pre-finance’ a documentary based on our concept. The Sport For Good Foundation’s intention to support our cause is also very encouraging. The increasing evidence regarding sport’s value to society has prompted DaimlerChrysler and Richmond, founding patrons of the Laureus Sport Awards, to set up Sport For Good. Harnessing the power and influence of sport, Sport For Good has plans to create a worldwide program of sports-related community initiatives.

One of the most intriguing remarks was the great interest of the television market to have a global Africa Day with specials, documentaries, entertain-ment, art and culture.

In the coming weeks we will work out television program-formats and forward these to the all interested parties. Furthermore, it is our intention to create a database with which we can inform and continue our dialogue with our new contacts and all interested parties who support the thoughts and initiatives generated by the Africa Peace Cup concept and the Foundation.
